Toyota Land Cruiser GRJ78, 2024

In 2018 I have been travelling in Papua New Guinea with a group sitting in the back of a Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ78, a very capable and sturdy off-road vehicle and basically the only type of car used on the rudimentary roads of that country. Since then I have read a lot about this car, its use by overlanders and the community that has been built around it also in Europe. Finally I now own a brand new one myself and have successfully registered it in Switzerland. It does not conform to all the modern day European regulations on cars why Toyota has stopped to import it into Europe in the early 2000s. Therefore it requires a specific single registration. Only the emission standard Euro 6 is fulfilled by using a petrol instead of a Diesel engine. Below some links for more information on this car, which I have come to like even more by driving it. 20 to 30 year old cars originally sold in Europe are still available on the market, but almost as expensive as the new one. You can also buy ready-made camper conversions both old and new, but at hefty prices. So I decided to do the conversion all by myself based on the very flexible aluminum profile system. Some pictures of these steps follow below.

2018 war ich mit einer Reisegruppe in Papua-Neuguinea unterwegs und sass hinten in einem Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ78, dem nahezu einzigen Fahrzeugtyp, der auf dem rudimentären Strassennetz in diesem Land anzutreffen ist. Seither habe ich viel über dieses Fahrzeug gelesen und auch sehr viele Reiseberichte von Weltreisenden, die damit unterwegs sind. Schliesslich bin ich jetzt selbst Besitzer eines solchen Neufahrzeugs und konnte es letztlich erfolgreich in Bellinzona (auf italienisch) zugelassen bekommen. Da es schon länger nicht mehr allen europäischen Normen entspricht, hat Toyota den Verkauf hier anfangs der 2000er eingestellt. Beim Abgas ist durch den Benziner anstelle eines Diesels der Euro 6 Standard aber gewährleistet. 20 bis 30 Jahre alte Fahrzeuge dieses Typs sind auf dem Gebrauchtmarkt in Europa noch erhältlich, aber da diese fast so viel kosten wie der Neuwagen, habe ich mich für neu entschieden (und damit in meinem ganzen Leben noch nie einen Gebrauchtwagen gekauft). Camperausbauten werden zu astronomischen Preisen gehandelt und daher erfolgte der ganze Ausbau nach eigenen Plänen und eigenhändig auf der Basis der sehr vielseitigen Aluprofile, was sich bisher sehr gut bewährt hat.
